The Short Answer
Light fixtures on a brick wall should generally be anchored into the mortar joints, not the brick faces — joints are repairable, brick faces are not. Anything carrying real structural load — a deck ledger, a large awning, a substantial sign — must not hang from brick veneer at all; it has to reach the framing or structural wall behind. And every anchor, of every size, is a hole through your wall's weather barrier, so hardware should be stainless or properly coated and the penetration should be sealed.

The Thing Most People Don't Know About Their Wall
Before deciding where a bracket goes, you need to know which kind of wall you own, because the answer changes completely.
Solid masonry. Two or more wythes of brick, structurally load-bearing. Common in Chicago bungalows, greystones, two-flats, worker cottages, storefronts and most pre-1940 construction. The brick is the building.
Brick veneer. A single wythe of brick standing in front of a wood- or steel-framed wall, with an air cavity between them and metal ties anchoring it back. Standard on virtually everything built since the 1970s. The brick is a rain screen — a cladding — and it carries nothing but its own weight.
If you are not sure, look at the bottom course. Small open gaps every few feet — weep holes — mean a drainage cavity, and a drainage cavity means veneer. See solid masonry vs. brick veneer repair.
Why this is the whole conversation: on a veneer wall, an anchor set into the brick is fastened to a panel that is itself only hanging from thin metal ties. Load it and you are loading the ties. That is fine for a house number. It is not fine for a deck.
Joint or Brick? The Practical Rule
For most light and moderate fixtures — a light, a hose reel, a downspout strap, a small camera, a flag bracket — drill the mortar joint.
The reasoning is simple and entirely about repairability:

The exception: where an anchor genuinely needs to develop higher capacity in solid masonry, the brick unit holds better than the joint, and that is the correct choice — with correct hardware, correct hole depth and correct edge distance. On soft pre-1900 brick, even then, tread carefully.
The Things That Must Not Hang From Brick Veneer
This is the safety section, and it is short.
Deck ledgers. A ledger board bolted to brick veneer is one of the more dangerous things you will find on a house. Veneer cannot carry that load, the ties are not designed for it, and deck failures are typically sudden and occur when the deck is full of people. The ledger must pass through the veneer and the cavity to fasten into the rim joist or structural wall, with flashing detailed so the penetrations do not become a water path — or the deck should be freestanding on its own posts, which is frequently the better answer.
Large awnings and canopies. Wind load on an awning is enormous and it works in every direction, including uplift. Anchors must reach the structure.
Substantial signage. On a storefront, sign brackets need engineered anchorage into structural masonry or the frame behind, sized for wind. Signs pulling out of facades is a routine failure on Chicagoland commercial buildings, and it usually takes a section of masonry with it.
Handrails and guardrails. Code-required rails must resist real lateral load from a person falling against them. A rail anchored into a single veneer brick can pull out at exactly the moment it is needed. On stoops and porches these should be anchored into solid masonry, into the concrete or stone of the stoop itself, or into a structural element.
Anything a person's safety depends on belongs in the structure, not the cladding.
The Slow Damage: Rust Jacking at the Anchor
Even a correctly placed anchor causes damage over time if the hardware is wrong.
Uncoated steel and cheaply plated hardware corrode inside a Chicagoland wall. Rust occupies several times the volume of the steel it replaced, and inside rigid masonry that expansion has nowhere to go. So it splits the brick from the inside out.
It is exactly the mechanism that lifts brick above a corroding lintel, just concentrated at a single point. You see it as:
- A crack radiating from an old bolt
- A brick face spalled off around a bracket
- Orange staining running down from an anchor
- A bracket that has visibly loosened as the masonry around it broke down

Use stainless or properly coated hardware. The cost difference at installation is trivial. The cost difference in ten years is a brick replacement and a repoint.
The Fast Damage: Water at the Penetration
Every hole you drill goes through the wall's weather barrier.
On solid masonry, water entering an unsealed hole goes into the wall mass and stays there, freezing and thawing through the winter.
On veneer, it enters the cavity — which the cavity is designed to handle, provided the flashing and weeps are working and the penetration isn't dumping water onto the sheathing.
Either way, the details that matter are:
- Seal the hole, not just the surface around it
- Bed the bracket so water cannot sit behind the plate
- Watch the top edge of any plate, flange or bracket — a horizontal ledge collects water and directs it into the wall
- Drill slightly downward-sloping holes where feasible, so gravity works with you rather than against you
- Never rely on caulk alone as the water barrier of a structural connection
Localized spalling in a neat circle around a light fixture, a camera or an old satellite dish mount is one of the most common patterns we find on Chicagoland walls, and it is almost always an unsealed penetration.
The Inherited Problem: Anchors Somebody Else Left
Older buildings — especially Chicago storefronts and commercial masonry — accumulate hardware. Old sign brackets, awning arms, wire runs, dead conduit straps, fire escape remnants, telephone and cable anchors from four different eras.
Handling them:
- Cutting flush is not removal. The shank stays in the wall, keeps rusting, keeps expanding. It is the buried portion that cracks the brick.
- Where practical, remove or drill out the anchor, then repoint the joint or replace the unit.
- Where removal would do more damage than leaving it — deeply embedded, structurally awkward — the honest answer is sometimes to treat, seal and monitor. A good mason will tell you which situation you are in.
- Do not fill holes with caulk or patch them with a bagged mix. Matched mortar in a joint; a matched replacement unit where a face is gone.

The Chicagoland Angle
Freeze-thaw multiplies every mistake. The region crosses the freezing point dozens of times each winter. An unsealed anchor hole that lets water into a wall in November has had many chances to do damage by March, and the damage compounds at the same fixed point year after year.
Soft historic brick splits easily. Chicago's pre-1930 brick — particularly Chicago common brick on side and rear elevations — is soft and porous. It does not tolerate percussion drilling, oversized anchors or edge-distance mistakes the way modern brick does. On these walls, joints are almost always the right answer.
Storefront and mixed-use stock carries decades of hardware. Commercial blocks along the region's older corridors have hosted many tenants and many signs, and the cumulative penetration count on a sign band is often in the dozens.
Bungalow stoops and porches are where handrail anchorage questions come up constantly — and where anchoring into the limestone or concrete of the stoop itself is usually better than into the brick beside it.
Repairing Anchor Damage: What It Involves
- Assessment — which anchors are live, which are abandoned, which are causing damage, which are safety issues.
- Removal or drilling out of abandoned hardware where practical.
- Joint holes: raked back to sound mortar and repointed with mortar matched for hardness first, then color, sand and texture — always softer than the brick it holds.
- Cracked or spalled units: removed by cutting the surrounding joints, not the brick, and replaced with matched or salvaged units.
- Reinstallation, where the fixture is staying, with stainless or coated hardware, correct hole depth and edge distance, bedded and sealed.
- Re-detailing the water path — sealant with backer rod where a movement joint is appropriate, and shedding geometry so plates and flanges do not collect water.
- Clean down before mortar cures hard.
What It Costs
There is no per-hole price, for the same reason there is no per-brick price: the cost is dominated by access and setup, not by the individual repair.
The drivers:
- Number of anchors and how scattered they are — a cluster on one elevation is far cheaper per anchor than a dozen spread across a facade
- Height and access, including whether staging or a lift is required
- Joint repair versus brick replacement, and how difficult the brick is to match
- Whether embedded hardware has to be extracted from soft masonry, which is slow, careful work
- Whether a fixture is being reinstalled, and whether it needs to reach the structure behind
- Any structural anchorage requiring engineering on a commercial building

DIY vs. Hiring a Mason
Mounting a light or a house number into a mortar joint with stainless hardware and a sealed hole is a reasonable homeowner job.
What is not: anything a person's safety depends on, anything on a veneer wall carrying load, extracting corroded hardware from soft historic brick, and repointing with a bagged mix. The Bottom Line
A brick wall looks like the most solid thing on your property, and it invites you to bolt things to it. It is worth pausing for three questions first:
- Is this veneer or solid masonry? Weep holes at the bottom course usually mean veneer.
- Is this load something the cladding should carry? If a person's safety depends on it, the answer is no.
- Is the hardware corrosion-resistant, and will the penetration be sealed?
Get those three right and a bracket lasts decades without touching the wall's condition. Get them wrong and you have installed a small, permanent water entry point with a steel wedge inside it — and Chicagoland winters will do the rest.

Should I drill into the brick or into the mortar joint?
For light and moderate loads, the mortar joint is generally the better choice, because a damaged joint can be raked out and repointed while a cracked brick face has to be replaced. For heavier loads where the anchor must develop real capacity, the brick unit holds better — but on veneer walls, heavy loads should not be carried by the masonry at all.
Can I attach a deck to a brick house?
Not to brick veneer, no. Veneer is a cladding, not a structure, and a ledger bolted to it can pull away with catastrophic results. The ledger has to pass through the veneer and cavity and fasten to the rim joist or structural wall behind, with proper flashing — or the deck must be freestanding on its own posts.
Why is the brick cracked around my old bolts?
Almost always because the anchor is uncoated steel that has corroded. Rust occupies several times the volume of the original metal, and inside rigid masonry that expansion has nowhere to go, so it splits the brick from the inside. It is the same mechanism that lifts brick above a rusting lintel.
Can anchor holes be filled with caulk?
Not as a repair. Caulk in a masonry hole is a temporary measure at best — it shrinks, it does not bond well to the interior of a drilled hole, and it traps water behind it. Holes in joints should be repointed with matched mortar; holes through brick faces usually mean replacing the unit.
What kind of anchors should be used in brick?
Stainless steel or properly coated hardware, sized for the load, in a hole drilled clean and to the correct depth. Uncoated steel and cheap plated hardware will corrode in a Chicagoland wall and eventually crack the masonry around them, no matter how well the installation is done.
Do I have to seal around a bracket bolted to brick?
Yes. Every anchor is a hole through your wall's weather barrier. The hole should be sealed, the bracket bedded, and the top edge of any plate or flange detailed so water is shed away rather than collected. Unsealed penetrations are a leading cause of localized spalling around fixtures.

Can I hang holiday lights on brick without drilling?

How do I mount a heavy sign on a storefront?
