Why Sealant Work Fails Early
No backer rod. The single most common defect. Sealant must bond to the two faces of a joint and stay free at the back so it can stretch. Backer rod sets the depth and breaks the back bond. Without it, the bead bonds on three sides and tears the first time the joint moves.

Sealing what must stay open. Weep holes are drains, not defects. Caulking them shut turns a brick-veneer wall — designed to let water in and drain it back out — into a wall that holds it.
